The Yamaha NMAX155, which underwent its first major model change in February 2025, inherits the design of Yamaha’s “MAX series” sport scooters. It features unique mechanisms such as the electronically controlled CVT “YECVT” with a downshift function and a dual-layer display, enhancing its sporty performance. The 2026 model arrives with three new color options, and this review focuses on the blue variant.

Surprising? Blue is a First for the NMAX Series in Japan

The Yamaha NMAX first appeared in Japan in 2016 as a 125cc scooter, balancing a manageable body size with a relaxed riding position. The NMAX155 expands on this by maintaining the same body size while increasing the displacement to 155cc, enabling highway travel.

The Japanese model debuted in 2017. In 2022, the “Blue Core” engine was updated to comply with new emission regulations. It features the “Smart Motor Generator” for quiet engine starts and an idling stop function for improved fuel efficiency. The frame was redesigned, suspension settings were revised, and equipment was enhanced, including smartphone connectivity. The styling was updated with new side panels featuring the “boomerang motif” characteristic of the MAX series.

The 2025 model marks the first major overhaul. The Blue Core engine, known for its balance of fuel efficiency and sportiness, features new crankcases, crankshafts, and oil pumps. The cam chain tensioner was changed from a torsion spring type to a hydraulic type to reduce friction loss. The radiator and radiator fan were also modified for improved cooling efficiency. Furthermore, a “riding mode selection function” is adopted for the first time, allowing riders to choose between “T mode” for smooth city riding and “S mode” for responsive performance on winding roads.

Additionally, the “SHIFT button” allows for up to three levels of downshifting, enabling engine braking on long descents and providing sharp acceleration for corner exits and overtakes. The “YECVT” electronically controls the CVT’s gear ratio in response to rider input, and the front and rear suspension damping characteristics have been adjusted to improve ride comfort near full bottoming.

The display is a dual-layer configuration of LCD and TFT. The TFT display can also function as a navigation screen when connected to a smartphone with the “Garmin StreetCross” app installed, significantly enhancing daily convenience. While the 2026 model has no changes to its main specifications or equipment, it introduces three new color options. Notably, the blue color (Deep Purplish Blue Metallic C), symbolizing Yamaha’s identity, is a first for the NMAX series in Japan.

Checking the NMAX155’s Ground Reach

The “Downshift” Function Delivers Sporty Riding Like a Manual Transmission

The NMAX155 was developed based on the 125cc NMAX and shares the same body size. Due to differences in equipment, its weight is 3kg heavier at 135kg. However, its maximum output has increased from 12 PS to 15 PS, and maximum torque from 1.1 kgf·m to 1.4 kgf·m, balancing the agility of a 125cc scooter with the smooth acceleration of a 155cc model. The “downshift” function further enhances the sporty riding experience of the NMAX155.

Pressing the “SHIFT button” on the left handlebar calculates the optimal CVT gear ratio in real-time based on information such as throttle angular velocity and opening, vehicle speed, and engine RPM. A motor then controls the CVT position to increase engine RPM. Pressing the SHIFT button again allows for up to three levels of downshifting. This enables effective use of engine braking on descents and provides smooth acceleration for overtaking, creating a downshifted state similar to a manual transmission, even with a CVT. The downshift is canceled and returns to the previous riding mode if the riding mode is changed during a downshift, if cruising is maintained, if the throttle is closed by a certain amount, or if the speed decreases further.

In both “T mode” and “S mode,” idling is around 1500-1600 rpm, with clutch engagement near 2600 rpm. Torque builds from 3000 rpm, providing practical pulling power at 4000 rpm. In “S mode,” the engine quickly revs up to 6000 rpm, where the VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) engages. The engine maintains its power band between 4000-6000 rpm during riding, with a direct throttle response for agile machine behavior and sporty riding.

In contrast, “T mode” maintains engine speed between 4000-5000 rpm, offering a milder throttle response. Acceleration is also gentler, resulting in a calmer machine behavior and a smoother ride.

At 70 km/h, the engine speed is 5000 rpm in “T mode” and 6000 rpm in “S mode,” a difference of about 1000 rpm. In the low to mid-range, this difference in RPM translates to acceleration, while at higher speeds, it affects response and engine braking. The riding experience changes significantly between modes, allowing riders to choose based on their preference and traffic conditions, which is a key characteristic of the NMAX155.

The MAX Series’ Best Balance of Convenience and Sportiness

The front and rear suspension offer good shock absorption. On well-maintained paved roads, the suspension provides a comfortable stroke, resulting in a pleasant ride. The compact and lightweight body is easy to maneuver through narrow streets, and it remains stable even on roads with noticeable ruts, demonstrating the high rigidity of the chassis. The handling feels substantial rather than overly light, contributing to the bike’s overall stability.

In “T mode,” the acceleration is more than adequate, while the machine’s behavior is mild, allowing for a relaxed ride. With feet placed on the front part of the floorboard, the riding position becomes relaxed, ideal for comfortable cruising on tours. Conversely, placing feet further back on the floorboard allows for natural grip of the center tunnel with the ankles, enhancing the feeling of unity with the machine. This also makes it easier to handle the machine’s behavior changes in “S mode” and control sporty riding using the downshift function.

The 125cc class’s lightweight and compact body offers ample storage. The Blue Core engine provides sufficient torque, making it highly convenient as a commuter in urban environments. Furthermore, the mode selection and downshift functions offer MT-like responsiveness, allowing for sporty riding as a sport scooter. With a 155cc displacement suitable for highway travel, a comfortable seat, and compliant suspension, touring is also enjoyable. The NMAX155 strikes an excellent balance between convenience and sportiness, making it arguably the most versatile and user-friendly model in the MAX series for a wide range of riders.

While the center tunnel may slightly hinder ingress and egress compared to flat-floor scooters, it also allows for better body hold, personally adding to the enjoyment of controlling the machine. The NMAX155 is recommended not just as a means of transportation, but as a companion that allows you to experience the joy of riding a motorcycle.
