I think I have established that the Vision 110 is more than capable of doing adventures. Here are some comments from my three week round trip from the UK to Slovenia.
● Be ruthless about the amount of staff you take. Less is certainly more. I was not camping this time so that meant I had no tent, sleeping bag, stove, etc to carry. I only packed one spare shirt, trousers, socks and pants. I washed stuff every other day.
● Try to have as many items as possible that can have a dual purpose. For example:
I wore zip-off trousers. No need to pack shorts.
I took a small dry bag. This doubled up as a bag for washing clothes in.
Shower gel. Can also be used for washing clothes.
Soft rucksack. I used this to store all my spare clothing and it stowed under the seat. It meant that if I needed to emergency carrying capacity, I could wear the backpack and free up space under the seat. But only as an emergency.
I chose spare underpants that could also double as swimming trunks.
Some hostels I stayed in had mixed dorms. I took a very lightweight cotton dressing gown to make changing easier and it also aided getting dry after a shower.
● Make some allowance for dramatic changes in the weather. I was setting off in a heatwave so wore summer weight bike gear. But I also packed my full rainsuit.
● Make sure you have a decent and up to date satnav, and take care of it. Although you can get from city to city without satnav, I had pre-booked all my accommodation. Trying to find my final destination each day without satnav would have been a nightmare. I remember this from the days before satnav was invented and I travelled the UK for work. City to city was easy, it was the final few miles which meant having to have an A-Z street map for that particular area.
● Make sure you have enough fuel each day. Don’t pass a filling station if you don’t know where the next one might be and you have under half a tank left (which on a Vision means only about 60 miles range left).
● Remember to stay hydrated.
● Take regular rest stops
● Remember to enjoy your adventure!
